The main objective of this study was to examine how ALCs implement their role in reducing out of school children in Zanzibar. It was guided by five specific objectives. The first was to find out nature of ALCs, secondly to examine the role of alternative learning classes, thirdly to examine achievements, fourthly to examine barriers facing ALCs and lastly to suggest ways of overcoming the barriers. The study was conducted in North „A‟ district which involves Kinyasini, Mkwajuni and Kibeni primary schools. The study used qualitative approach whereby districtive design was used, thematic content analysis used for data analysis. There were 36 respondents who selected purposively, officers, head teachers, class teachers, students of ALCs and regular class teachers who receive students from these classes. The findings showed there were mixed children in ALCs. However, the study found that there were lacks of implementation for some roles including supervision and mobilization of society since Shehas did not play their role effectively and some head teachers rejected the ALCs in their schools. Also, low cooperation and poverty are among the barriers for these classes. The study recommended that there are needs for the government to insist the stake holders and implementers of ALCs to agree these classes to work effectively. More effort is needed in cooperating with the parents to solve the problem of children to make them coming to school. Also should improve the economic level of the society to raise their life standard to reduce poverty so as to afford school facilities for their children.
